Crowded Department Stores

I was going to go to Walmart this evening but I never made it out of the car. I went in the parking lot and decided it just wasn't worth it! I have never seen so many people gathered in one area. What is the population of the Tristate area? Well, Wikipedia puts us around 288,649 according to the 2000 census. We have 5 Walmarts within a 20 minute radius of each other and 4 of those are the newer Super Walmarts and in the "city limits". I bet that 1/5 of our entire tristate population was at one of these Walmarts today.

What is the appeal? The convenience of one stop shopping? My experience with convenience shopping (and I did it for years at Walmart) is that you will conveniently spend $250, of which you didn't need $150 worth of it (dvd's, clothing, etc.) and you could have saved another $75 by being patient and watching the grocery circulars.

We are by no means a rich area. Heck, I would be suprised if 60% of our population met the lower portion of middle class, which I might also add is $32,000 to $60,000 gross annual income. Not to get into personal finances but we fall about midway between that statistic on 2 incomes (I only work part time) and we struggle. Our mortgage is the only debt we have and let me tell ya, it is pocket change! I would bet money you don't know anyone who pays a cheaper mortgage, that is the only reason we have kept this place, is to rent it out. The average rent in South Point is double my mortgage. No lie! We have 23 acres in Jackson we bought on land contract and paid off a year ago and we will eventually be living on.

Anyways, I know that we are almost debt free and only have living expenses and we find it difficult sometimes to make ends meet. A little more than a year ago I was bumming money from my parents to pay the electric bill. Oh, and guess where I did ALL of my shopping. Yeah, Walmart. Don't get me wrong. I love Walmart, honestly. They have alot to offer and cheaper than most prices, UNLESS you are patient and watch sale ads. I am not saying drive around all over the place and waist gas money. What I am saying is pay attention, do you really need that item? Do you really need that DVD? Yeah, it is in the $5 bin but $5 adds up darn quick. Just 5 of those bargain movies will cost $25! And now that they have a redbox movie rental at the Walmart in South Point, I will show you how to get free movie rentals. Make a plan of attack. If you are going to drive close to Kroger, Foodfair, Aldi's etc. Make it a point to make out your list and get your coupons together, stash them in your purse and make it a point to stop.

Would you rather spend a little time researching ads and clipping coupons or would you rather spend more money? Time is money right? Why not have as much of it as you can? Start out small if it feels daunting or you just don't get the hang of it. Ask questions. I will answer any and all to the best of my ability and as we grow here we can help one another. Coupons and sales are out here to help us save money but they are not going to force it on you. You have to be willing to help yourself.

here. Making them $0.44. This coupon states for the exfoliator kit or something but works on just the pads.

Purina Cat Food $4.33 & Purina Puppy Chow $4.73. Use $4.00 off printable

I think the Glade glass scents were on sale and there was a BOGO coupon in a recent paper and there is one in the November Hallmark magazine. But South Point Walmart was wiped out.

Easy Work Reaps Tons of Savings Part I

I had a little bit of time to waste before I went home today, so I decided to stop by Kroger and see what Smartsource coupons I could snag (the red machine that spits out coupons, you can find them at varying spots in the store, next to the products they are good for. Can be used at ANY store!).

Anyway, I have a theory that Kroger puts out these coupons just before a sale on that item, then they take them away and if they have any left after the sale, they put them back out. 3 weeks ago they had Smartsource coupons for $1 off any 1 variety Ore-Ida Steam N Mash Potatoes, the next week the machine was gone and the Steam N Mash potatoes were 2/$4. But I was smart and snagged about 10 coupons when they were up! I got 5 bags for 5 bucks. Today, they had them back up but the price was $4.99 per bag! Check back in as I test out my theory and we see if some of these things end up on sale in the next couple of weeks!

Below is a list of the Smartsource coupons I was able to get from the Huntington, WV (5th Ave.) store.

Save $1 on any Ore-Ida Steam N Mash potato product (exp. 4/30/09)

Save $1.50 on any 1 Multipack of Boost Glucose Control Nutritional Drink

Save $1 on any 4 Dannon Frusion 7oz. Smoothie Bottles or any 1 7oz. 4 pk. (exp 12/31/08)

Save $1 WYB any 5 Dannon 6oz. Yogurt cups (exp. 12/31/08)

Save $0.75 on any 1 Bumble Bee Easy Peel Sensations 5oz. Bowl (exp. 02/28/09)

Save $0.55 on any 1 Sweet Sue Chicken or Chicken & Dumplings product (exp. 01/31/09)

Save $1 on any 2 bags of Eight O' Clock Coffee (exp. 01/31/09)

Save $0.55 on any 1 variety Progresso broth (exp. 12/14/08)

Save $0.75 off any 1 StarKist Creations Tuna or Salmon pouch (exp. 1/31/09)

Save $0.55 on any Mt. Olive Pickles, Peppers or Relish product (exp. 12/05/08)

Save $0.75 on any 1 Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers product (exp. 12/31/09)

Save $0.55 on any 2 Healthy Choice Soups (can or microwaveable bowl) (exp. 11/30/08)

Save $0.55 on any one size or scent Gain Laundry Detergent (exp. 12/31/08)

Save $0.75 on any size or scent Clorox Cleanup, Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner or Clorox Automatic Toliet Bowl Cleaner ( I used one of these at Walmart a few days ago and got it for $0.75) (exp. 11/16/08)

Save $1.50 on any Pledge Furniture Care product (exp. 12/31/08)

Save $2 on 1 Glade Scented Oil Candle Holder or 2 refills (exp. 01/31/09)

Save $0.55 on any 1 4pk. (or larger) Scott Extra Soft or 1 12pk. (or larger) Scott 1000 Toilet Paper (exp. 11/30/08)

Save $0.55 on one 6 roll pack or larger of Sparkle Paper Towels (exp. 1/26/09)

Save $1 on any 1 Pampers Diapers (or pants) Jumbo Pack (or larger) (exp. 01/31/09)

Save $1 on any GoodNites Sleep Pants Jumbo Pack(or larger) (exp. 01/30/09)

So, remember to pick up those coupons when you are walking or browsing through the store! I didn't purchase a single item from Kroger today and got multiple coupons for 23 different items. 10 minutes worth of work and tons of savings. You are NOT limited to using these coupons to just Kroger. Smartsource coupons are manufacturer coupons and accepted everywhere you can use a coupon.

These coupons vary by region just like the newspaper insert coupons. Have a few coupons I missed or one that might not be in my region that I should be on the lookout for? Please feel free to share the savings alert and keep in touch to see if I can prove my theory about when and why Kroger puts these coupons out.

Coupon Swap

So the votes are in and tallied. We had 4 votes for a swap meet, 4 votes for mailed and 3 for both. In all fairness we shall basically do both. Dee had a great idea that those of you who cannot make it to the swap can email me your coupon wish list and address. No need to address it if I can get them to you via work etc ;)
Any ideas ladies?

I thought we might start out by trying to fill emailed wish lists and then our own. I know some people swap coupons for coupons, coupons for stamps and whatever else one might need. The ones who send a wish list won't have anything to swap right away but we can brainstorm and figure that out later.

Ofcourse, if I have an abundance of coupons needed by someone they are more than welcome to them ;)

We need to come up with a time and place. I thought maybe Empire Books, since the little kids can play if we want to bring them along. Please leave any ideas. We can also switch it up and meet at different places.

How often do we want to meet? Every six weeks, 2 months, you tell me. What days? Weekends are best for me in the winter months. After work and dark at 5 pm, I'm worthless! But I am sure I can manage whatever fits everyones schedules best. I can't wait for spring!!!

Do we want to meet as soon as this week? I'm game. I thought it would be fun to have everyone bring 1 item they got free or darn close to it and swap them as an ice breaker. Draw a name kinda thing.

Just shootin' some ideas out there. What are some of yours? If I make all the decisions, I get all the coupons...LOL

Kroger Week of 10/19

I am going to refrain from shopping this week. Well, grocery shopping that is. My budget for 4 people is $45/week. I stocked up last week and blew my budget to about $110 for both weeks. I am still CVSing on the deals that I can roll over my ECBs and spend very little OOP. So, I compiled a list for Kroger by just looking at the ad.

One good trick I use is to shop early in the morning. You can get the best "managers deals" on meats. And don't forget that Walmart price matches any ad except Aldi's. It is hassle free. When you check out show the ad to the cashier and she will adjust the price. Easy peasy.

Okay, Kroger has alot of 10 for 10 items this week. You can view the circular here. I am only going to list the ones with coupon matchups. And other good deals.
